EdgeX Foundry Reaches 1 Million + Platform Container Downloads, Launches New Fuji Release

BARCELONA, SPAIN and SAN FRANCISCOOctober 28, 2019EdgeX Foundry, a project under the LF Edge umbrella organization within the Linux Foundation that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for IoT edge computing independent of connectivity protocol, hardware, operating system, applications or cloud, today announced the availability of its “Fuji” release. This release offers additional security and testing features on top of the production-ready “Edinburgh” release launched this spring.

“EdgeX Foundry has experienced significant momentum in developing an open IoT platform for edge-related applications and shows no signs of slowing down,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager, Networking, Edge and IoT, the Linux Foundation. “As the only Stage 3 project under LF Edge, EdgeX Foundry is a clear example of how open collaboration is the key to an active community dedicated to creating an interoperable open source framework across IoT, Enterprise, Cloud and Telco Edge.”

Launched in April 2017, and now part of the LF Edge umbrella, EdgeX Foundry is an open source, loosely-coupled microservices framework that provides the choice to plug and play from a growing ecosystem of available third-party offerings or to augment proprietary innovations. With a focus on the IoT Edge, EdgeX simplifies the process to design, develop and deploy solutions across industrial, enterprise, and consumer applications. As a Stage 3 project under LF Edge, EdgeX is a self-sustaining cycle of development, maintenance, and long-term support. As an example of the rapidly accelerating use of the code, EdgeX hit a milestone of 1 million platform container downloads, which almost half of these took place in the last few months.

“The 1M container download isn’t our only milestone,” said Keith Steele, EdgeX Foundry chair of the Technical Steering Committee and LF Edge Governing Board member. “The development team has expanded with more than 150 active contributors globally and the partner ecosystem of complementary products and services continues to increase. As a result, we’re seeing more end-user case studies that range from energy and utilities, building automation, industrial process control and factory automation, smart cities, retail stores and distribution and health monitoring.”

The Fuji Release

As the fifth release in the EdgeX Foundry roadmap,  Fuji offers significant enhancements to the Edinburgh 1.0 release, which launched in July, including:

  • New and improved security features to include PKI infrastructure for token/key generation.
  • Application services that now offer full replacement capability to the older export services provided with previous EdgeX releases. These application services offer more scalable and easier to use solutions to get data from the EdgeX framework to cloud, enterprise and on-premises applications.
  • Example application services are provided with this release to allow users to quickly move data from EdgeX to the Azure and AWS IoT platforms.
  • A new applications function Software Development Kit (SDK) also provides the EdgeX user community with the ability to create new and customized solutions on top of EdgeX – for example, allowing EdgeX to move edge data to legacy and non-standard environments.
  • Unit test coverage is considerably increased (in some services by more than 200 percent) across EdgeX core and supporting microservices.
  • New device service connectors to BLE, BACNet, IP camera, OPC UA, GPS, and REST device services.
  • Choices for commercially-supported EdgeX device connectors are also starting to blossom with offerings for CANopen, PROFINET, Zigbee, and EtherCat available through EdgeX community members.

LF Edge on Display

Live demonstrations of EdgeX Foundry use cases will be available at the LF Edge booth (booth A151) at IoT Solutions World Congress in Barcelona, October 29-31, 2019. Dell Technologies and IOTech will also be on-site debuting new demos based on EdgeX Foundry while other featured LF Edge projects include Home Edge and Project EVE.

EdgeX Foundry leaders will present on “Leveraging EdgeX Foundry as an Open, Trusted Data Framework for Smart Meter Monitoring,” on Tuesday, October, 29 at 12:05-12:50 pm.

Additionally, LF Edge will host a workshop entitled “State of the (LF) Edge” on October 31 in Lyon, France, co-located with  Open Source Summit Europe (October 28-30).  More details are available here.

Inaugural EdgeX Open

The EdgeX Foundry community recently kicked off a series of hackathons, titled the EdgeX Open. More than 70 attendees participated in the first event on October 7- 8, 2019, in Chicago. Hosted by LF Edge and the Retail Industry Leader Association (RILA), and sponsored by Canonical, Dell Technologies, Deep Vision, HP, Intel, IOTech, IoTium and Zededa, the event featured five teams that competed in retail use case categories. More details on the event, including the winning use case from Volteo, are available in this blog post.

The next hackathon will coincide with the Geneva release, targeted for Spring 2020. It will be centered on the Manufacturing vertical and held in a location in Europe.

EdgeX Foundry Announces Production Ready Release Providing Open Platform for IoT Edge Computing to a Growing Global Ecosystem

SAN FRANCISCO  July 11, 2019EdgeX Foundry, a project under the LF Edge umbrella organization within the Linux Foundation that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge IoT computing independent of hardware, silicon, application cloud, or operating system, today announced the availability of its “Edinburgh” release. Created collaboratively by a global ecosystem, EdgeX Foundry’s new release is a key enabler of digital transformation for IoT use cases and is a platform for real-world applications both for developers and end users across many vertical markets. EdgeX community members have created a range of complementary products and services, including commercial support, training and customer pilot programs and plug-in enhancements for device connectivity, applications, data and system management and security.

Launched in April 2017, and now part of the LF Edge umbrella, EdgeX Foundry is an open source, loosely-coupled microservices framework that provides the choice to plug and play from a growing ecosystem of available third party offerings or to augment proprietary innovations. With a focus on the IoT Edge, EdgeX simplifies the process to design, develop and deploy solutions across industrial, enterprise, and consumer applications.

The fourth release in the EdgeX roadmap, Edinburgh offers a stable API baseline for the standardization of IoT edge applications that future-proof IoT investments by fostering an ecosystem of interoperable microservice-based capabilities and decoupling investments in edge functionality in areas such as connectivity, security and management from any given backend application or cloud. The EdgeX framework is designed to facilitate the secure deployment and management of devices and applications at the edge to accelerate time-to-market and enable new data-based services and capabilities such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

“Since its launch, EdgeX Foundry has experienced significant momentum in developing an open platform that can serve as the industry framework for IoT and edge-related applications,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager, Networking, Edge and IoT, the Linux Foundation. “EdgeX Foundry is one of the anchor projects for LF Edge and Edinburgh release is a major step in unifying open source frameworks across IoT, Enterprise, Cloud and Telco Edge.”

Edinburgh is Ready for Production Deployment

EdgeX Foundry’s community adoption continues to accelerate. Currently, there are more than 100 unique contributors to the project and code downloads are approaching 5,000 a month at a 75% month-to-month growth rate. Momentum is expected to continue with EdgeX’s Edinburgh release and rapidly growing commercial support in the ecosystem.

Key features for this release include:

  • Stability: Stable API’s protecting future investment and supporting future long term support
  • Connectivity: More SDKs for north and southbound connectivity and a wider range of standard connectors
  • New Features: Significant new features, including binary data support, database swapability and improved APIs to help facilitate management/monitoring capability
  • Global Support: Support from the global EdgeX Foundry ecosystem – as well as the broader LF Edge umbrella community – that offers a range of complementary products and services

Market Utilization of EdgeX Foundry

Since the project inception, there have been tens of thousands of trials and pilot deployments of the EdgeX framework in the field and many of these are converting to production with the Edinburgh release. Several organizations already provide commercial solutions based on EdgeX, with many others folding it into their product roadmaps. For example:

  • Edge Xpert: From IOTech Systems, Edge Xpert uses the latest stable release of EdgeX Foundry to create a commercially supported solution from the baseline open source technology. IOTech will also soon announce hard real-time extensions to EdgeX.
  • MFX-1 IoT Edge Gateway: From Mainflux, the MFX-1 IoT Edge Gateway based on the EdgeX Foundry framework, is an edge computing solution supported with the EdgeFlux application for gateway management. Integrated with Mainflux IoT Cloud Platform it provides comprehensive Cloud /Edge IoT System.
  • NetFoundry Ziti Edge: NetFoundry’s Ziti Edge provides programmable, software-only “Northbound” connectivity for EdgeX Gateway applications and services. Based on Zero Trust security principles, with integrations for HW root of trust based identity and Trusted Execution Environments (TEE), Ziti Edge delivers secure “Silicon-to-Cloud” connectivity, using any Internet connection, while keeping both sides of the connection “dark” to the Internet.
  • VMware Supports EdgeX: Developers who deploy any combination of EdgeX Foundry and/or Project Photon OS with VMware Pulse IoT Center can receive support from VMware for both Pulse IoT Center and EdgeX open source software. When used with Pulse IoT Center’s device management capabilities, open source tools such as EdgeX offer developers increased control over how, when, and where they run their applications and manage their data.

The EdgeX framework is also being leveraged in various industry collaborations. For example, in collaboration with the Industrial Internet Consortium® (IIC) EdgeX is used as the foundation for the Optimizing Manufacturing Processes by Artificial Intelligence (OMPAI) testbed which explores the application of AI and industrial internet technologies, deployed from the edge to the cloud, to optimize automotive manufacturing processes.  EdgeX is also the foundation for the Open Retail Initiative (ORI) which has the goal of facilitating open innovation within the retail/commerce space.  Work for the ORI is manifested within the Commerce Working Group in the EdgeX project and initial target use cases include computer vision-assisted advanced loss prevention.

Planning Ahead

Later this summer, the first EdgeX Foundry ecosystem hackathon will be hosted in the Bay Area. This initial event will be tied to the Commerce Working Group, hosted by Intel within the EdgeX project, with various award categories for implementation of the EdgeX framework in retail use cases. The best all-around winner will get to showcase their solution at future LF Edge or EdgeX Foundry events. Details will be available in late July via the EdgeX website, email list and Slack channel.

LF Edge Momentum Continues with Project EVE Seed Code, Project Demonstrations at IoT World and New Members

SANTA CLARA, Calif. IoT World  – May 14, 2019 – LF Edge, an umbrella organization within the Linux Foundation that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system, today announced continued project momentum. Project Edge Virtualization Engine (EVE) receives initial seed code from LF Edge founding member ZEDEDA, as the community showcases a range of edge/IoT application demonstrations, from connected cars to wind turbines, on-site at IoT World.

Additionally, LF Edge welcomes new Associate and Liaison member organizations Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), the LIONS Center at the Pennsylvania State University, OTAinfo, and University of New Hampshire’s Interoperability Lab (UNH-IOL).

Edge Virtualization Engine Launches Initial Seed Code

Analysts predict more than 30B connected devices worldwide by 2020, all generating continuous data streams that will need to be processed quickly. Edge computing enables data processing through local gateway systems to reduce latency and provide faster response. With Project EVE, edge gateways and devices run a variety of edge workloads simultaneously, decoupling application management from the underlying hardware. Applications can be deployed in standard virtual machines (VM) or container environments and be managed through a standard set of APIs.

“With Project EVE, the goal is to create a single virtualization standard for edge devices for the industry to build around so that we can enjoy the benefits of cloud-native applications sooner rather than later,” said Said Ouissal, co-founder and CEO of ZEDEDA. “Imagine how much more impact we can achieve now that edge applications can be reliably managed and secured.”

LF Edge Welcomes New Members 

LF Edge’s significant growth over the past five months– including strong industry event presence and face-to-face community meetings – continues today with the addition of new Associate and Liaison members:  Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), the LIONS Center at the Pennsylvania State University, OTAinfo, and University of New Hampshire’s Interoperability Lab (UNH-IOL).

LF Edge Builds Momentum with New Members, Blueprints as Community Works Toward Interoperability for Open Edge Computing

New Open Edge Demos from Akraino and Project EVE to Debut at Open Networking Summit North America

OPEN NETWORKING SUMMIT, SAN JOSE, Calif., April 2, 2019LF Edge, an umbrella organization within the Linux Foundation that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system, today announced growing momentum with new blueprints from Akraino Edge Stack and four new general members including Alef Mobitech Inc., HarmonyCloud Inc., Section, and Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. The Akraino blueprints will debut at the Linux Foundation’s Open Networking Summit (ONS) on April 3-5 in San Jose.

LF Edge is comprised of projects that will support emerging edge applications in the area of non-traditional video and connected things that require lower latency, faster processing and mobility. Akraino, a project creating an open source software stack that supports high-availability cloud services optimized for edge computing systems and applications, is marking a technical milestone with eight blueprint families with more than 19 under development to support a variety of edge use cases. The Akraino community tests and validates the blueprints on real hardware labs supported by users and community members. The first release of Akraino is scheduled for Q2 2019 and will include several validated blueprints.

“LF Edge hit the ground running when we launched in January,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager, The Linux Foundation. “Our collaboration for edge solutions across multiple industries in IoT, Enterprise, Telecom and Cloud has been very well received by the community.”

In addition, EdgeX Foundry, which enables an ecosystem of plug-and-play components to unify the IoT edge computing marketplace, is preparing “Edinburgh,” its fifth code release for Spring 2019 that will include binary data support, automated performance and security testing, new device services and a certification program. EdgeX Foundry will be on-site at Hannover Messe from April 1-5 in Germany with a building automation demo at the Dell Technologies booth (Hall 6, Stand C40). The demo will highlight the EdgeX framework’s ability to bring together a real-world, smart flexible office space environment based on components from a variety of vendors leveraging numerous connectivity standards, operating systems and hardware types.

Showcasing the Edge at Open Networking Summit (ONS)

LF Edge will make its debut with a booth on-site and several speaking engagements at ONS on April 3-5 in San Jose. The booth will feature demos from Akraino that showcase the emerging  blueprints for network cloud integration and industrial automation. Additionally, Project EVE will display a model wind turbine that demonstrates EdgeX Foundry technology for industrial IoT.

Background On New LF Edge Members

LF Edge welcomes Alef Mobitech Inc., Harmony Cloud, Marvell, and Section as new general members working together to make it easy to quickly build, deploy, run, and scale edge computing solutions. SAN FRANCISCO, January 24, 2019The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today announced the launch of LF Edge, an umbrella organization to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system. LF Edge is initially comprised of five projects that will support emerging edge applications in the area of non-traditional video and connected things that require lower latency, faster processing and mobility.

EdgeX Foundry Announces Additional Security Functionality, New Management Features and the Ability to Create Flexible, Smaller IoT Solutions with New Delhi Code

SAN FRANCISCO – December 13, 2018EdgeX Foundry, an open-source, vendor-neutral project that enables an ecosystem of plug-and-play components to unify the IoT edge computing marketplace, today announced the availability of its enhanced Delhi code that offers management features, additional security functionality, new Software Developer Kits (SDK), and an updated user interface. This third major code release also offers the ability to connect to a wide-range of databases and operate EdgeX in lightweight devices.

IoT solutions are inherently heterogeneous and an open IoT interoperability framework like EdgeX Foundry accelerates time to value in developing and deploying real-world use cases such as building automation, energy management, asset management and logistics. The Delhi code, which was initially released in November, enables users  to manage important functions such as buffering and filtering data, applying security measures and the ability for organizations to select and use the data store that best fits their use case and system needs.

EdgeX Foundry Seeds an Open Marketplace for IoT Edge Computing with New Developer Kits and Smart Building Automation Community Demo at IoT Solutions World Congress

Intel, Redis Labs, ZEDEDA and six other tech influencers commit to IoT interoperability and join EdgeX’s mission to create a unified edge ecosystem

BARCELONA, SPAIN and SAN FRANCISCO – October 15, 2018EdgeX Foundry, an open-source, vendor-neutral project that enables an ecosystem of plug-and-play components to unify the IoT edge computing marketplace, today announced the availability of EdgeX-enabled developer kits and a Smart Building Automation Community Demonstrator that will debut at IoT Solutions World Congress on October 16-18 in Barcelona.

Hosted by The Linux Foundation, the EdgeX platform is architected to run on any hardware or operating system and unify components coded in any programming language to accelerate time to market and simplify the deployment of secure IoT solutions. The framework serves as a de facto standard to bring together any mix of existing connectivity protocols with an ecosystem of heterogeneous value-add applications.

EdgeX-enabled Developer Kits Offer Freedom of Choice 

Developer kits are important tools for building new applications and solutions. A variety of dev kits are already on the market; however, the majority of these kits lock the developer into a particular back-end platform or cloud. In comparison, dev kits based on the EdgeX framework will provide developers with the freedom to choose from an ecosystem of components bound together by the EdgeX interoperability APIs.

“With the emergence of these dev kits, developers will have the opportunity to prototype with their choice of ingredients while taking advantage of plug-in components from EdgeX’s growing vendor-neutral ecosystem,” said Jason Shepherd, EdgeX Foundry Governing Board Chair and Dell Technologies IoT and Edge Computing CTO. “This allows them to focus on innovation rather than reinvention, in addition to being able to add and exchange components at any time to optimize their solution throughout the development and deployment lifecycle.”

There will be two different kinds of dev kits – community and commercial. For options in the community track, the bill of materials will be purchased independently online, the code will be downloaded straight from a special repository on the project GitHub, and questions will be answered through forums like the EdgeX Rocket Chat. The first kit is based on the Samsung Artik with Grove sensor, and options will grow through community contributions over time. The commercial track for the dev kits will provide EdgeX members with the ability to seed the emergence of an open marketplace for IoT edge computing. These kits will offer end users with attractive options to get started with professional support so they can focus on their preferred value-add rather than supporting open source code. Commercial options will include kits based on supported versions of the EdgeX framework itself (neutral to any plug-in value add), kits based on specific IoT platforms, and microservice plug-ins for value-add such as analytics, data orchestration and security.

Smart Building Automation Use Case Community Demo

EdgeX Foundry is debuting a new community demo at IoT Solutions World Congress that will highlight the platform’s ability to bring together heterogeneous solution components. This first community demo showcases how EdgeX can bring together a real-world, smart flexible office space environment based on components from a variety of vendors leveraging numerous connectivity standards, operating systems and hardware types. Third Code Release

The growth and diversity of the EdgeX ecosystem over the last year has helped the technical community hit major milestones including the “California” release, which made the switch to Golang for the baseline reference implementation. Since the release in April, EdgeX Foundry unique code contributions from members and non-members alike have more than doubled to 70 on a regular basis.

These contributors have played a major role in the upcoming “Delhi” release, which offers major enhancements including the first management features, more security functionality such as access control and improved security bootstrapping, C and Golang-based Device Service SDKs and a reference GUI for demos and simple deployments. Open source IoT edge project continues to experience global momentum and widespread adoption

HANNOVER, Germany – April 23, 2018EdgeX Foundry, an open source project building a common interoperability framework to facilitate an ecosystem for Internet of Things (IoT) edge computing, marks its one-year anniversary with a substantial member presence at Hannover Messe and the launch of its first annual Community Awards program.

Introduced last April by The Linux Foundation and numerous members, EdgeX Foundry has grown into a highly respected platform that makes it easier to build, deploy, run and scale IIoT solutions given its native interoperability. Attracting small start-up companies to technology giants, the project has seen a 50 percent growth in the last year and has grown its global footprint to almost 80 member companies in 17 countries.

Some of these members and their technology will be on display at Hannover Messe in Germany from April 23-27. The EdgeX Foundry booth, Hall 6: B17, will feature interactive demos from Canonical, Dell, IOTech, IoTium, RSA, Software AG and VMware and exclusive keynotes in the booth theatre. EdgeX Community Awards

To mark its momentum, EdgeX Foundry launched the first annual EdgeX Foundry Community Awards to honor those individuals who have contributed in leadership and innovative solutions. Community members nominated their peers, and the EdgeX Foundry Governing Board selected two winners for the Contribution Award, which highlights leaders who have helped EdgeX Foundry advance momentum this year through working groups, special projects, and/or contributed large amounts of code, bug fixes or documentation, while the Technical Steering Committee (TSC) selected two winners for the Innovation Award, which recognizes individuals who have contributed the most innovative solution. Winners will be announced at Hannover Messe.

“We are excited to recognize leaders in our community who have helped EdgeX Foundry become a trailblazer,” said Jason Shepherd, Chair of the EdgeX Foundry Governing Board and Dell Technologies IoT CTO. “Member companies both small and large are active in the EdgeX technical community in various ways and are leveraging EdgeX in their product and solutions roadmaps. In fact, we’ll see a few prototypes later this year.”

Building Momentum Ahead of California

In February 2018, EdgeX Foundry released the California Preview, giving developers early access to some elements of the California code release that support more efficient microservices and establish a path toward scalability. The California preview features several GoLang microservices that are drop-in replacements for the Java versions, including core services like Core Data, Metadata and Command.

The full California release will be available in Summer 2018 and represents a major step in evolving the EdgeX framework to support the developer requirements for deployment in business-critical IIoT applications.

“We are just at the beginning of this IoT journey,” said Keith Steele, EdgeX Foundry Chair of the Technical Steering Committee and CEO of IOTech. “EdgeX Foundry continues to hit milestones, and as we work towards the California release in June, the platform will be able to quickly and securely deliver interoperability between components, applications and services across a wide range of IoT use cases.”

Several project members, including Cavium, Cloud of Things, Dell, IOTech, Mocana, RSA and VMware, have already started to provide commercial solutions based on EdgeX, while others have embedded EdgeX technologies into their product and solution roadmaps. Additionally, the Government of Serbia Innovation Fund has awarded member Mainflux a grant to develop MFX-1, an IoT edge gateway powered by EdgeX platform. Ecosystem Expansion

EdgeX Foundry has made significant progress in its first year and has reached engagement on a global scale from countries such as the United Kingdom, South Korea, Serbia, Spain, Tunisia, Canada, Israel, Germany and Japan. More than 200 people from member companies join weekly and quarterly face-to-face meetings to align on project goals, develop working groups and identify project maintainers and committers across key functional areas. This month, EdgeX Foundry welcomes the addition of five new members, including Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP), ETRI, ISSAT Mateur, Samsung SDS and Volterra.

“Since its foundation in 1976, ETRI has made a huge effort to grow the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry in Korea,” said Dongsoo LEE, VP of ETRI Honam Research Center. “EdgeX is a promising platform to support real-time data communication among a vast number of IIoT end devices with different communication standards. Time-Sensitive Networking is a key feature for innovative applications in Smart City and Smart Energy and we are delighted to collaborate on this project.”

“ISSAT Mateur is excited to join EdgeX Foundry and work on integrating a full open source platform to support the growing demand and the diverse traffic patterns coming from smart devices in diverse IoT systems,” said Dr. Akram Hakiri, Associate Professor and Senior Research Scientist  at ISSAT Mateur. “We at ISSAT Mateur believe that the EdgeX Framework will make it possible to bring the cloud computing micro-services, such as communication, computation, network control and storage, to the network edge at single hop users’ edge wireless devices to improve network reliability. EdgeX Foundry Momentum Continues with California Release Preview and New Vertical Solutions Working Group Focused on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Use Cases

California preview demonstrates significant performance improvements ahead of full code release in Summer 2018   

SAN FRANCISCO – February 27, 2018EdgeX Foundry, an open source project building a common interoperability framework to facilitate an ecosystem for Internet of Things (IoT) edge computing, today announced early access to some elements of the California code release. Demonstrating significant performance increases and size reductions, these elements support more efficient microservices and a path toward scalability. The full California release will be available in Summer 2018 and represents a major step in evolving the EdgeX framework to support the developer requirements for deployment in business-critical IIoT applications.

The EdgeX Foundry community is working toward improved performance, lower start-up times and reduction in the overall footprint via alternative Go Lang and C-based implementations of key EdgeX microservices for easier access when deploying IoT solutions. The California preview features several Go Lang microservices that are drop-in replacements for the Java versions, including core services like Core Data, Metadata and Command. Initial test results of the Go Lang microservices include 97 percent less memory than the Java variants with a 99 percent improvement for start-up time.

“The California preview is a testament to the collaborative effort of the EdgeX community and our commitment to improve the size and speed of the platform,” said Keith Steele, EdgeX Foundry Chair of the Technical Steering Committee and CEO of IOTech. “By providing key EdgeX microservices in both Java and Go Lang, we offer developers more flexibility and a wider range of use in real world IoT and edge computing solutions.”

The full California code base is expected to be released in Summer 2018 with key planned features that include baseline APIs and reference implementations for security and manageability. The California code is a follow up to the first code release, called Barcelona, which launched in October last year. Accelerating IIoT Deployments through Vertical Solutions

EdgeX Foundry has also launched a new Vertical Solutions Working Group to host use case-focused projects developed with input from end users to create solutions that meet their specific requirements. Moonki Hong, Senior Engineer at the Software R&D Center for Samsung, chairs the Vertical Solutions Working Group. The new projects include:

  • The Oil and Gas Project will perform gap analysis and deliver specific market requirements to other working groups, create a reference architecture for specific use cases, develop unique source code and liaise with universities and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Alberto Dellabianca, an Edge Computing and Technical Lead with National Oilwell Varco, leads this project.
  • The Smart Factory Project concentrates on developing the key success functions to enable smart factories with common EdgeX features such as the data processing runtime and workflow, ezMQ, OPC-UA protocol software and microservices, and Pharos, the service deployment manager and agent. The proposed features will be delivered in the form of microservice or relevant library software. MyeongGi Jeong (MJ), Software Architect for Samsung Electronics, heads the project.

A Growing Ecosystem Supporting the IoT Landscape

Hosted by The Linux Foundation, EdgeX Foundry is a collaborative project of 70 members and growing, working together to make it easy to quickly build, deploy, run and scale IIoT solutions. EdgeX Roadmap

The EdgeX Technical Steering Committee has established a bi-annual release roadmap that demonstrates a long-term strategy to provide a product-quality open source foundation for interoperable commercial differentiation. The project is also working towards improved performance, lower start-up times and a reduction in the overall footprint via alternative Go Lang and C-based implementations of key EdgeX microservices. A preview of a Go Lang implementation is targeted for early 2018 with initial testing promising an order of magnitude smaller footprint than the current Java baseline.

EdgeX Foundry’s next major release, “California,” is targeted for Spring 2018. California will be a key step in EdgeX Foundry’s commitment to evolve the framework to support the requirements for deployment in business-critical IIoT applications.
